Our patriarchal culture has a way to make us believe there’s a certain way, a better way, to look, behave, & want. You know what I mean – if you’re not already extroverted, slim, creative, affluent & happy, then you should aspire to be. That’s what success is, right? We are making a lot of progress to diversify what success can be, but unconsciously, we’re biased to favor the preconceived notions of health, wealth, love + freedom. Even if we don’t really want that version for ourselves.
Because of that, we’re not authentic, we’re buying into the script that keeps us in the gender pay gap & we’re missing the point about the purpose of our lives – being completely, unapologetically our weird, quirky selves.
How do we let go of the pressure to be creative, outgoing, relevant, successful, public, warm (all very masculine qualities) & make space for the feminine too? Is it even possible to build a business without conforming to the social media platforms’ algorithms that were created by power- & money-hungry men?
How can we be vulnerable while connecting with our audience? How can we nurture interdependence online? Is it even possible to create meaningful bonds on social media? Are these platforms doomed to promote the masculine way? Can we help shape them when they’re designed to gamify + make the viewers addicted to sensationalism? Are we building our business models solely on lack & urgency?
It’s not sustainable for me & even worse, it’s not fulfilling either.
Thankfully, there are many movements that reclaim slowness + wholeness
New, more humane platforms are emerging. Banks + greed do still have a lot of power, but communities are also gaining more & more influence in our societies & shaping our lives in marvelous ways. Let’s break out of groupthink & manifest the diversity of the human experience!
